I have been writing and teaching writing for most of my adult life. My focus has been opinion pieces and narrative non-fiction, and I have had the privilege of being published in many magazines and newspapers. Over the past few years, I have been working on a couple of screenplays and a novel. But all of that was interrupted in March of 2020: COVID lockdowns.

Years ago, my dad passed on a copy of a diary kept by his aunt from 1918-1919. During the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic. I had kept it filed away in a box that has moved with me numerous time. So I dug around and sat down to read it after so many years. His aunt Clara not only chronicled her daily life as an 18-year-old in rural South Dakota but also mourns numerous young townspeople who died of influenza.

I immediately put my other projects aside and decided it was time to research her diary. And I gave birth to Clara’s Journal: And the Story of Two Pandemics (order here!), which I proudly published in June 2021. I use her journal to recreate the town of Cresbard, SD,  in the early twentieth century: from the people to the places to the entertainment to their daily life. It is thoroughly researched to give readers a sense of life one hundred years ago following the outline of Clara’s journal.

Since its publication, I have returned to my novel, Cassandra’s Daughter, with plans for its release in the fall 2022. So stay tuned. In the meantime, I still love writing essays and opinion pieces, and you will find those here. So don’t forget to get on my mailing list and to subscribe below so that you receive updates on my work. And would love to hear your feedback!
